چکیده

Spinal SEP; N13; Cervical Radiculopathy Abstract Introduction: Most studies on somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) in cases of cervical radiculopathy routinely analyze scalp (cortical) responses (mixed or dermatomal SEPs), depending mainly on evaluation of N20 whose origin is the primary somatosensory cortex. It was suggested that selective study of the N13 potential, might be a useful technique to improve both accuracy and sensitivity of the diagnosis of cervical radiculopathy. Aim: The aim of our study was to test the sensitivity of the spinal N13 potential in uncovering lesions of cervical nerve root; and to compare it to dermatomal and mixed nerve SEPs. Methods: Forty patients with clinical suspicion of cervical nerve root lesion had been selected. Twenty normal subjects constituted the control group. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the cervical spine was performed for all patients to reveal the presence of any cervical nerve root compression. The following electrophysiological studies were done (sensory and motor conduction studies of the median and ulnar nerves, mixed SEP of median nerve, dermatomal SEP and spinal N13 SEP study of the median nerve. Results: There was a positive correlation between the mixed and the dermatomal SEPs and between the mixed SEP and N13. On the other hand there was a positive correlation between the dermatomal SEPs and N13. There was a positive correlation between the MRI and the mixed SEP, the dermatomal SEP and N13, respectively. Sensitivity and specificity of N13, dermatomal somatosensory evoked potentials (DSEP) and mixed SEP were determined using MRI as a gold

Somatosensory evoked potentials following nerve and segmental stimulation do not confirm cervical radiculopathy with sensory deficit.

Twenty eight patients with unilateral cervical radiculopathy were studied by somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) from nerve stimulation at the wrist and from skin stimulation at the first, third or fifth finger depending on the root involved. In order to evaluate the reliability of various "radicular SEP patterns" as described in the literature, absolute latencies and side-to-side difference...

Multichannel somato sensory evoked potential study demonstrated abnormalities in cervical cord function in brachial monomelic amyotrophy.

BACKGROUND Brachial monomelic amyotrophy (BMMA) is known to affect the central cervical cord gray matter resulting in single upper limb atrophy and weakness. SETTINGS AND DESIGN Case series of BMMA patients who underwent somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) studies at a tertiary referral center. AIMS We proposed to record Multichannel Somatosensory Evoked Potentials (MCSSEP) from median an...

Cervical spine manipulation alters sensorimotor integration: a somatosensory evoked potential study.

OBJECTIVE To study the immediate sensorimotor neurophysiological effects of cervical spine manipulation using somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs). METHODS Twelve subjects with a history of reoccurring neck stiffness and/or neck pain, but no acute symptoms at the time of the study were invited to participate in the study. An additional twelve subjects participated in a passive head movement...

Peripheral and segmental spinal abnormalities of median and ulnar somatosensory evoked potentials in Hirayama's disease.

OBJECTIVES To investigate the origin of juvenile muscle atrophy of the upper limbs (Hirayama's disease, a type of cervical myelopathy of unknown origin). SUBJECTS Eight male patients were studied; data from 10 normal men were used as control. METHODS Median and ulnar nerve somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) were recorded. Brachial plexus potentials at Erb's point (EP), dorsal horn respon...

Somatosensory conduction times and peripheral, cervical and cortical evoked potentials in patients with cervical spondylosis.

Peripheral, cervical and cortical somatosensory evoked potentials after median or ulnar nerve stimulation were recorded in 21 patients with cervical spondylosis with radiculopathy or myelopathy. The test was normal when pain and paraesthesias were the only symptoms, while pathological in radiculopathy with objective neurological signs. The results varied in patients with cervical myelopathy.
